101 Frugal Tips #29

#29 Leave them asking, "Where's the beef?"

How do you cut a grocery budget when you're trying to cut out processed foods?

Peace can be made in the healthy foods vs. the grocery budget battle.  One way to ease the stress on a healthy foods budget is to reduce the amount of meat you serve at each meal.

This summer we committed to eat meat as the "main" dish just four nights out of the week.  That's a big deal for my meat and potatoes clan!  We serve a meatless meal once a week, and the other two days we make do with just one pound of meat cooked in a dish of mostly veggies and rice.

That one change in our menu has allowed us to keep the same food budget even as prices rise and our children grow.

  1. Ha! I tried this the other night with maybe 3/4 lb. of gr. beef in our taco salad. Jamie honestly asked if there was truly beef in the salad. I usually add a can of black beans to the meat to make it heartier, but I forgot!
