I used to occasionally order the rather over-priced beer bread mixes from the direct sales companies, and then I did a little research, and after several flops, came up with a version I love from scratch. Oh, glorious!
Since several among my friends and family share my adoration of of the carbohydrate food group, I thought this would make a great addition to my Gifts From the Kitchen gift baskets.
3 c. flour
4 tsp. baking powder
2 tsp. salt
1/3 c. brown sugar
Blend the above in a food processor or stir and then sift together. Be sure there are no lumps of brown sugar or they will be difficult to mix in later. The mix fits in a sandwich sized Ziploc. I'm going double bag this for shipping.
Include these directions with your mix:
Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
Combine beer bread mix with 12 oz. beer, and mix just until dry ingredients are moistened. Pour into a greased bread pan. Melt 1/4 c. butter and pour over the batter.
Bake 45 minutes. Here's a recipe for a delicious dip to serve with the bread.
1/4 c. mayonnaise
1/4 c. plain yogurt (or sour cream would work)
1/4 c. bacon crumbles (or real bacon bits)
1 tsp. onion powder
The dip just puts this bread completely over the top, and you could make some up if you are delivering your gift in person. My gifts have to travel through the mail, so the recipe will have to suffice.
